Crane Overturn in Singapore

A mobile crane overturned yesterday at a job site in the Jurong area of Singapore near the port and main industrial area of the city.

The incident caused work on the site – where contractor Yong Xing Construction is building a new electrical substation – to be suspended while the Ministry Of Manpower (MOM) carried out an investigation.

The crane, rented from Beng Huat Crane, was apparently booming out at the time it overturned, we do not know if it had a load on the hook.

Balzers, Lichtenstein

A mobile swing cab industrial crane overturned last week in Balzers, Lichtenstein, while picking & carrying a large concrete panel.

The crane overturned sideways onto the bank

The crane an 18 tonne Bollhalder Bakran 90, with an articulated boom, owned by Autokran Ag Rheintal was travelling close to an embankment leading down to a stream when the swinging load took the crane over sideways. Fortunately the operator was unhurt. And quick action by the fire service managed to prevent any serious contamination of the stream.

A large All Terrain crane was called in to lift the overturned machine back onto its wheels.

A large self-erecting tower crane overturned onto a building in Mannheim, Germany last Thursday, narrowly missing a children’s day care center.

The police suspect that the crane was overloaded when it tipped, fortunately no one was hurt in the incident, including the operator who was standing well clear using his remote controller. The crane landed mostly on a building being demolished, but also caused some damage to a new building being built alongside.

Cobb County, Georgia

A crane overturned yesterday in Cobb County, Georgia, to the north west of Atlanta, while lifting trees from the back yard of a home.

We have few details at this stage, but the crane’s boom came down on the garage of the home slicing it off from the house. We understand that no one was seriously injured in the incident.

A man was seriously injured yesterday when a telehandler fitted with a work platform overturned.

The man Chad Miller, 25, in the platform at the time with a load of roof shingles. According to the local police, the CAT TH360B was working on the three storey apartment block and was being moved, when it ran into soft, uneven ground and flipped over sideways.

The man was thrown from the platform – an open front and sided roof platform – onto another telehandler working alongside, with the platform and shingles clattering down on top of him. Miller, who is apparently employed by Lorz Construction which is carrying out the work, was rushed to hospital with serious arm and leg injuries.

Fatal Boom Lift Overturn

Toronto, Canada

A boom lift overturned in the town of Markham, on the north east side of Toronto, Canada, this morning killing one of the platform’s occupants and seriously injuring another.

The machine was working in the street, close to an intersection

The boom lift, which looks like an 86ft JLG telescopic, is owned by United Rentals and was driving with the boom fully retracted and almost fully elevated. It was working on the side-walk/pavement when one of its wheels rolled over a large culvert/manhole, breaking through the cover and causing the machine to lose stability and overturn.

One man was declared dead at the scene, while the other was rushed to hospital with very serious injuries.

The JLG 860SJ weighs over 17 tons, and this configuration the wheel would have had at the very least five tons bearing on it, and if poly-filled this would have been concentrated on a very small surface area. The chances of the cover being able to withstand such point loading’s was remote.

It looks certain that the machine was driven over a manhole cover which gave way under the high point loading’s imposed.

Crane overturn in New Jersey

Arlington, New Jersey

A boom truck overturned yesterday in Arlington, New Jersey damaging a car but thankfully there were no injuries.

The crane was set up on grass with outriggers retracted but down, mats were used under the outrigger pads/feet. The crane was using its retracted boom to support overhead power lines, while maintenance work was being carried out, when it began to tilts and then went over. The operator was able to jump clear, but the crane came down onto the front end of a parked car.

No one was injured in the incident, and a large wrecker truck was called in to recover the car and the overturned crane, while OSHA was notified, and is expected to investigate.

Bouchain, North East France

A three axle All Terrain crane overturned yesterday in Bouchain, near Valenciennes in North East France, after the ground gave way under the outriggers on one side of the crane.

The crane went over as the soft ground gave way beneath the outriggers on one one side of the crane

The crane, a PPM operated by Dumonceau Levage – part of the Loca Bourgeois / Guillouart crane rental\group – went over sideways while lifting a three ton concrete beam.

The fully extended main boom pulled down some overhead cables as it went over and damaged two parked cars,coming to rest across the trailer of the truck delivering the beams.The operator suffered some minor injuries, but was seriously hurt. Three other mobile cranes were called in to lift the stricken crane upright.

A tower crane collapsed spectacularly in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China after extreme winds and torrential rains hit the area. The 30 meter free standing saddle jib crane finally succumbed to the winds and buckled in a spectacular fashion, that captured on CCTV.

Thankfully no one was injured in the incident and damage was restricted to the crane and a parked car.

Man Killed in Tree Trimming Accident

NORTHAMPTON TWP., Pa.

A man died after falling from a tree-trimming bucket in Bucks County. The man, who has not yet been identified by police was working in Northampton Township, Bucks County on Andrea Drive when he was thrown from the bucket he was working in. Police say the man was in the bucket truck removing trees from a property and at some point a portion of a tree being cut down was tied to the boom of the bucket truck. As the tree was being moved, the weight of the tree and the position of the truck caused the vehicle to flip onto its side. The man was ejected from the bucket, landed on the ground and the bucket landed on top of him, police said. Initially, 911 dispatchers were told the man was conscious and bleeding from the mouth. But police say when they arrived, the man was not breathing and CPR was provided by witnesses and members of the Northampton Township Volunteer Fire Company. The man was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Langhorne where he was pronounced dead. The man was an employee of Rick’s Tree Service in Ivyland. The incident is now being investigated by the Northampton Township Police Department and OSHA.

An articulated loader crane overturned while carrying out a lift at a pub in Manchester on Thursday night.

The crane, mounted on a articulated truck/tractor trailer, was delivering a large advertising hording, it had lifted it clear of the trailer slewed over the side and was moving it into place when it went over. There were a few patrons in the pub- the Angel – at the time, but while part of the building was damaged no one inside was affected.

It is hard to see if the overturn was caused by an issue with the outrigger set up, soft ground conditions or a simple overload. Thankfully no one was injured in the incident.

We have received a report that a telehandler overturned yesterday in Melbourne, Australia, but have no details of where it occurred and what it was doing.

It looks as though it might have been travelling up a slope with a fully extended boom when it overturned. We do know that no one was reported to have been hurt in the incident.

Scotland,

A six axle All Terrain crane left a single track road and rolled into a field in Scotland earlier this week

So far we have been unable to trace the exact location of the incident, which involved a six axle Liebherr All Terrain owned and operated by Ainscough Crane Hire. We understand though that it occurred on one of the single track roads around Loch ness to the south of Inverness.

The driver was not seriously hurt, but did suffer cuts and bruises. A recovery team has now arrived, – with wrecker trucks, a larger loader crane and earthmoving equipment, not to mention airbags- and has been trying to pull the crane back up onto its wheels.

Parrish, Alabama

A crawler crane overturned on a highway project near the town of Parrish, northwest of Birmingham, Alabama yesterday killing the operator.

The crane was working from a terrace on a sloping job site and looks as though it was preparing to tandem lift some concrete bridge beams, but the boom went over the back of the crane causing it to overturn. The operator sensing the crane start to go jumped out of the cab, but the crane then landed on him. He was declared dead at the scene.

Crane Overturn Delays Refinery Sale

A 270 ton lattice truck crane overturned yesterday at the Exxon Mobil refinery in Torrance, near Los Angeles, California.

The crane was reported to be lifting a reactor top for a 100,000 barrel a day fluidic catalytic cracking unit, although a photo we have been sent suggests that it was preparing for the lift, rather than carrying it out at the time. The six axle crane looks to be short rigged and tipped over backwards, causing the boom to fall onto part of the refinery. Three men working with the crane received minor injuries.

The damage and time needed to clear it is expected to delay the refinery from reaching 15 straight days of normal operations, as required by a sales agreement with PBF Energy, which is paying $537.5 million for the plant.

PBF spokesman Michael Karlovich said: ”PBF is working with Exxon to understand the impact of today’s incident on refinery operations. We continue assessing Torrance refinery operations and will update our prior statements on the transaction if and when appropriate.”

Crawler Overturns on Soft Ground

Plaquemine, Louisiana

A 600 ton crawler crane overturned last month at the Dow Chemical plant in Plaquemine, Louisiana.

Information on this incident have only recently been received, but have now been confirmed, it seem the incident occurred on Thursday September 8th while a relatively new Liebherr LR1600 was being moved while fully rigged.

The crane, reportedly owned and operated by Mammoet, was travelling on timber mats, arranged in a loose longitudinal pattern. The pressure at one point proved too great and the timers and crane track sunk into the soft ground causing the overturn. We have been assured that no one was injured in the incident. Plaquemine is to the south of Baton Rouge in Bayou country.

Dow said that it is working alongside Mammoet to investigate the incident to find out what caused the crane to overturn.

A Rough Terrain crane overturned in Arlington, Texas yesterday pulling overhead power lines down onto the Highway.

A Rough Terrain crane overturned in Arlington Texas yesterday pulling overhead power lines down onto the Interstate 30 highway halfway between Forth Worth and Dallas. The crane, a larger Lorain, was working on a road job constructing a new overpass when it overturned. Fortunately no one was hurt, although the highway was closed in both directions while the power lines were properly deactivated.

The crane’s outriggers were correctly set up with mats under the pads. It looks as though the cause must be down to overloading, although we do not know what it was lifting at the time, but photos show that the boom came down into an open top shipping container. We will update when we learn more.

Tamil Nadu, India

Two bystanders were killed on Friday when an articulated pick & carry crane overturned while trying to pull a crashed truck off the median of a divided highway in Coimbatore in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India.

The crane started to lift the truck when it rolled forward applying a side loading to the crane, pulling it over. The two men , a painter (32), and a night watchman (66), are reported to have died the instant they were hit by the falling crane. Two similar cranes were called in to carryout a hairy looking recovery of the overturned crane.
